“Cleaning” Belgrade of refugees
“Cleaning” Belgrade of refugees
Serbian authorities implement action removal of all refugees from Belgrade. We recall that in Belgrade, in an abandoned warehouse near the bus and train stations, as well as in the vicinity of them, since August 2016, visited some 1,500 refugees, mainly from Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Despite the catastrophic living conditions, almost non-existent basic of infrastructure, abandoned by almost all, have managed to survive one of the coldest winters. With the help of the few organizations and local and activists from abroad, with great effort provided the most minimal requirements for life, shared kitchen where they cooked meals for the refugees, improvised toilets for hygiene.
8 May, the authorities informed the public that refugees from the center of Belgrade to be deployed in camps throughout Serbia. Refugees have so far avoided to go to camps, for many reasons, among other things, due to restrictions on movement, as well as the illegal deportation to Macedonia and Bulgaria. Please note that a large number of refugees who are willing to go to some of the camps was rejected, often without explanation.
How is the image of the Commissariat for Refugees very bad with refugees, because of their poor and often hostile attitude towards refugees, were used NGOs working with refugees to convince them to “voluntarily” leave the camps. These NGOs are learning the fact that part of their activities are carried out in the camps, which are controlled by the Commissariat and they decide who can and who can not enter the camps.
Although it was announced that the entire process will take 20 days, but 10 May in the morning, a large number of members of the Commissariat and police appeared in warehouses, stating that within 15 minutes start to spray all the rooms means against rats. They said that refugees must go out and take your stuff, because it is a highly toxic agent, and that the evening will be able to return in the room that they use. Due to the short time part of the refugees failed to present his things, while some still asleep when it started spraying. A large part of scarce assets that are in possession of the refugees is destroyed in this way.
Already on 11 May at 7 in the morning, the objects entered Commissariat workers, who with the help of police and municipal police, expelled the remaining refugees, thereby destroying the tents, with the excuse that they no longer need. Among workers Commissariat were observed and persons on whose violent behavior towards refugees have already pointed out during the two years that lasts refugee crisis in Serbia. The vast majority of refugees accepted to go to the camps, because certainly they had no other choice, and threatened them and arrest and deportation, if they are seen on the streets. A smaller portion is in despair sent to the borders, to once again attempt to cross.
Already some 11 hours began the demolition of the buildings in which the refugees stayed. The first building that was demolished was a shared kitchen, as well as improvised toilets shower.
Although the refugees promised that they will have freedom of movement and to be able to leave the camps, for two days the camp in Obrenovac and Krnjaca, who are the closest to Belgrade, closed and from them it is not possible to get out.
